Purpose of the Job

We are looking for a savvy Buyer who loves flowers and plants and has a deep understanding of the magical world of cut flowers.

Our ideal candidate can do the juggle between negotiating with suppliers whilst still getting excited about finding just the right flowers for all our Big Days, such as Mothers’ Day, Valentines, Birthdays and giving just the right bunch of flowers as a gift. Think whimsy, but with a keen sense of business and a love of roadtripping to find the perfect bloom.

If you think that this could be you, you would be expected to plan, select and procure a range of products within our distribution centres that supports our business goals and targets. We would also expect continued sales growth and the ability to understand the demands of our customers in terms of price, quality and availability. Your love for people will furthermore ensure that you work with our suppliers, marketing and store operations teams to ensure consistency in customer experience.

Lastly, you will be given freedom to drive new product development, source new suppliers and growing programs and undertake packaging and specification reviews.

Job Objectives

The business speak for your objectives include:

Execute the buying strategy of the Shoprite Group through the planning, selection and procurement of a range of products within a distribution centre that results in the achievement of profitability goals and targets.

Executes all aspects of the buying process for a product category, creating a compelling assortment that meets financial targets and supports brand objectives.

Ensures sales growth and increase in gross margins by considering market trends and customer demand in terms of price, quality and availability when making purchasing decisions.

Works collaboratively with suppliers, category, marketing and store operations teams to execute the buying strategy, ensuring a consistent customer experience and aligned execution of pricing, promotions, ranging, display and layout.

Undertakes a variety of daily, weekly and monthly tasks focussing on the profitability of the category by driving new product development, sourcing new suppliers, growing programs and undertaking packaging and specification reviews.

Plans promotional and peak period opportunities and leverages data to review performance, drive improvements and optimise opportunities.


  • Degree or Diploma in Business, Sales, Marketing, Supply Chain, or a related field – (highly beneficial)



  • +2 years’ experience in a buying role, with demonstrable experience executing all aspects of the buying process for a distribution centre category in a large retail organisation – (essential).
  • Demonstrable experience with sourcing and supplier management along with complex vendor / supplier negotiations – (essential).
  • Specialised knowledge of flowers and fynbos – (essential).
  • Well-developed understanding of supply chain concepts, processes and systems – (essential).

Knowledge and Skills

  • Comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing a product’s cost and selling prices combined with commercial and financial trade-offs in category sales – (essential).
  • Understanding of the retail value chain and profitability drivers – (essential).
  • Proficiency in MS Office 365 with advanced Excel skills – (essential).
  • Ability to travel independently, valid driver’s license – (essential).
